Marriage of Muslim Women in America
Women rights is a debatable topic all the time. Even though the position of women has changed a lot in America, there are still not equal rights between women and men in Muslim countries: Marriage rules and polygyny show how women plays a role between America and Muslim countries.
mARRIAGE rULESIn America, Muslim women have more freedom. Compared to Muslim countries, there are not so many arranged marriages. Muslim women can marry non-Muslim men in America. However, In Muslim countries, Muslim women can only be allowed to marry Muslim men.
“Islamic jurists have traditionally held that Muslim women may only enter into marriage with Muslim men,Evidence for this is the verse 2:221 where it speaks of not marrying Muslim women off to non-Muslim men. Another piece of evidence is a woman at the time of the Prophet Ramla bint Abi Sufyan who's husband converted to Christianity, which made the marriage void.” link Here is an example that A muslim woman married a Non-Muslim man in America.. "When Huma Abedin, aide to Hilary Clinton, married Anthony Weiner, New York Congressman, it sent tongues wagging in the Muslim community. She did the unthinkable, the ultimate taboo for a good Muslim girl from a good Muslim family – she married a Jew… and he did not convert." link |
PolygynyDefinition: “When a man is married to more than one wife at a time, the relationship is called polygyny, and there is no marriage bond between the wives.” link
There always exists debates about polygyny. Although polygyny is illegal in America, some people still support the polygyny rules: “Islamic leaders say the religion designates the man as the head of the household.” link "Average life span of females is more than that of males, and World female population is more than male population." link However, there is no rule that a Muslim woman can have several husbands. marrying several wives does not only depend on whether a Muslim man wants, and there is a strict rule for polygamy in Muslim countries: a husband have to to treat wives equally. “The Qur'an clearly states that men who choose this route must deal with their wives justly. If the husband fears that he cannot deal with his wives justly, then he should only marry one. The Qur'an does not give preference in marrying more than one wife but allows it to make it easier on a woman who has no support. Islamic scholars opinion that the husband must tell the first wife if he wants to marry another.” link |
